Instructions

We have reviewed red flags for child abuse and how to make a report of suspected child abuse. Now, let's look at some scenarios that provide examples of possible abuse. Read each scenario and click on the action that best describes what you should do in this situation.

Scenario #1

You are a Penn State employee and are walking to your car in a University parking lot. You come across a car that has two small children strapped in their carseats. It is mid-July with temperatures in the 90s. The windows are up. The doors are locked. The children are screaming and crying. There is no parent in sight. What do you do?

Scenario #2

You are an Authorized Adult working the registration table at a Penn State soccer camp. You see a young girl begging her father to not drop her off. You notice the dad pushing her to move to the registration table. The girl seems to be frozen in place. She is not moving and he is prodding her. You overhear the father say, "You're so slow! I can't stand it! You are never gonna be a success like me! Let's go to the desk." The girl reluctantly registers for camp. During camp, the girl seems withdrawn, unhappy, and depressed. At the end of the week, the campers play a scrimmage for their parents. When the girl sees her father in the crowd, she becomes visibly shaky. After the game, you see her father berating her for her performance and her teams loss. He says, "You are an embarrassment! You aren't worth the uniform you are wearing! You're no daughter of mine. You’ll never amount to anything."

Scenario #3

You are an Office of Physical Plant electrician (designated an Authorized Adult under Penn State Policy AD39) called to repair a light in a campus men's restroom. As you enter the restroom you see two sets of feet in a stall. You announce that you are in the restroom to make a repair. A man quickly exits the stall and leaves the restroom. You then hear someone crying. You ask "Is everything ok in there?" A young girl walks out and tells you that the man forced her into the restroom. What do you do?
