In response to the tragedy of Jeanne’s murder, her parents, Howard and Connie Clery, worked relentlessly to champion a bill originally enacted by Congress and signed into law by President George Bush in 1990 as the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990.

The law requires colleges and universities to disclose certain timely and annual information about campus crime and security policies. All public and private institutions of postsecondary education participating in federal financial aid programs are subject to the Clery Act.

The Clery Act is monitored by the U.S. Department of Education and includes stiff penalties for those found to be in violation of the law. Violators can be fined up to $35,000 per violation. Along with monetary penalties, the Department of Education can suspend institutions from participating in federal financial aid programs.
